This special exhibition, in conjunction with Jonathan Green Week, presents the work of Charles Allen Smith, an award-winning photographer, filmmaker, producer, and director. A part of the exhibition showcases a new Charles Allan Smith documentary entitled “Jonathan Green’s SEEKING.” In this fascinating video, Smith captures striking images of Green as he brings to life on canvas this memorable painting. Smith’s evocative image-making, resounding with the joyful singing of Marlena Smalls and the Hallelujah Singers, captures all of that emotion-filled day at Mepkin Abbey in September 2007 when Green presented SEEKING to the monastery. The exhibition also includes Jonathan Green at Work, an award-winning documentary film of a day in the life and work of the artist. The film, providing a rare glimpse into a lifestyle that integrates Green’s work, environment, and Gullah heritage, begins with the start of Green’s day as he takes up his brushes in the earliest hours of the morning while also discussing his life, his dreams, and his way of being. Following a natural rhythm of life that Green has created in his home and studio, the film inhabits the artist’s world as the day unfolds. The documentary includes a brief visit to Green’s birthplace and the source of his inspiration, Gardens Corner, South Carolina.Exhibition visitors will also see a series of candid photographic images of Green at work— rich, passionate photographs filled with the textures, simplicity, and grace for which Green’s work and personality are recognized around the world. Smith’s videos and framed still photographs are available for purchase at Gallery Chuma and at the Gibbes Museum store.
